The path follows the Voie Verte in Olargues and then the PR of Malviès northwards. It rises towards the Col du Bouis and the Hameau de La Salle, leaves the PR/GR double signposting and continues towards the west, surrounded by chestnut trees. After the Hameau de Campels and the Hameau de Bonnefont, the path arrives at Notre-Dame de Trédos with magnificent views of the foothills and the Somail. The path continues towards Prémian "attention balisage GR". The valley offers itself to your sight.

Beautiful but quite physical. At the exit of Prémian, take the direction of Langlade and of the Saut de Vesoles. The trail climbs regularly, it suffered a lot during the winter 2014-2015. After a short descent, you arrive at Langlade, keep some strength as the serious things begin. After Langlade, face 600m of positive difference in altitude in 2.7km (1.2miles), it's hard uphill, it's wild and it requires some concentration. In wet weather, it can quickly become tricky. Follow the torrent as close as possible. The path of a thousand steps (sentiers des milles marches) really lives up to its name. Don't hope to pass through a big storm... The only break in this world of verticality is the horizontal guard path, which you follow for a small kilometre (less than 0.6miles).

At the top, the contrast is striking: everything is flat. The positive difference in altitude of the stage is done, but you are not halfway up the mileage... The rest of the stage is less picturesque but more restful. There are wide tracks, magnificent views and remarkable mushroom beds in the autumn... The arrival at the windmill field tells you that you have arrived at the Col de Fontfroide. If you decide to spend the night at the gîte d'étape de Flacheraud, there is 1.5km (0.9miles) left.

boucle olargues 01The signposting does not lead to the village, but leaves directly across the river, in the direction of Le Verdier-Haut and the Gorges d'Héric. After the footbridge of sighs, you climb the path of the Guards. The quality of its recent restoration will make you forget the slope. 671m D+ in 2km (1.2miles) to the Bartouyre pass! The break will be well deserved. At the pass, the slope becomes gentler to the benefit of the recently developed Biterrois trail, which offers safe passages and relatively flat ground up to the Baraques de Caylus. The descent to Colombières is now only a formality. The views of the square tower and the Albine torrent are magnificent.

From the pass, the day starts well and the slopes are wide, in the undergrowth, with a mid-mountain atmosphere. After 5kilometres, the Bourdils refuge surprises you in the heart of the deep forest. Water supply is possible. 2.5km further on, you come around Montahut by the south. The view is breathtaking. If it's windy, plan to cover your hands and feet. In spring, broom and mountain flowers are available. Pass the base of the rock of Montahut, you start a long descent of 600 D- via the ruins of Chavardès, the Col de Landes, the Secadou, the lake of Airette. The 2014-2015 winter floods have considerably changed the conditions of the crossing of the stream of Chavardès. Choose the right stones... As soon as you hear the peacocks, you approach Bardou. In spite of the appearances, you can go around it, don't hesitate to visit the hamlet, which has been beautifully restored.

A final climb up to the Col du Bardou and the final descent to Mons, Col de la Maure, Col Coupiac and the last big slabs of Gneiss takes you to the village. During the summer, this south-facing descent can be very hot, especially at the end of the day. Attention: you are on a mountain bike downhill path from the Col du Bardou to Mons.

If you arrive from Mons la Trivalle the day before, the start from Colombères sur Orb by the Voie Verte will delight you. The small road, then the Voie Verte, takes you to Poujols sur Orb: it's flat! In Poujols, you leave the Voie Verte by a staircase that takes you through the village and to the town hall. Straight ahead is the suspension bridge, which takes you across the Orb. At the bridge on the right, and before Margal, the signposting heads south down the slope towards Les Trois Rouyre. The climb is dry. Near the Col des Aires, there is a small flat area where you can take a breather before reaching the plateau at 630m.
At Trois Rouyre, a wide track takes you to the road to Plaussenous.
