Caroux Mountain Light ...
Located in the northwestern part of the department of Herault, Caroux is the nearest part of the southern Cévennes the Mediterranean coast. The southern slopes of Caroux and Espinouse protect the valleys of the Orb and Jaur and form an iconic landscape of Haut Languedoc, the key area of outdoor activities.
In the heart of the Regional Natural Park of Haut-Languedoc, Caroux (lo Cairosus meaning "The Stony") turns out to be, by imposing his hands, by the omnipresence of the rock, its terrain very rugged character a real mountain where many torrents, notched grooves (Gorges d'Heric, Gorges Colombieres Gorges Madale) cross.
Consists of gneiss (rich in mica flakes), this gigantic natural viewpoint to the thousand facets reflects light that it deserves to be called "Mountain of Light".
Caroux legend dates back to the time when Zeus had not yet defeated and blasted the Titans. Among them lived a beautiful girl "Cebenna". She gave Zeus so envious that he decided revenge she should die of love. The years passed, Cebenna fell in love with a man, but as Zeus had decided she could not conquer her heart.
After many years, love, despair, she decided to make the mountains to live in solitude and weep his sentence.
Legend has it that this is where Cebenna (who gave his name to the Cevennes) would eventually extend to die of grief. And nature, as to immortalize him forever have composed a mineral green ... (Excerpt from the book "The Gorges d'Heric").
Real balcony overlooking the Mediterranean, it serves as a landmark for sailors along the Languedoc side.
This very steep massif is ideal for the practice of hiking, sometimes sports, and climbing altitude. The "PR Summit Caroux", from the hamlet of Duch, reach the summit, at 1091 m through the viewpoint, a unique and memorable sight!
It is common to observe the sheep, emblem Caroux. Introduced in 1956, the Corsican mouflon is acclimated in the southern mountain area average, which now has the largest sheep population of France.
