A little bit of history :

The Canal du Midi has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1996. An outstanding monument for its technical, architectural and landscaping features, the canal is above all a "utilitarian" construction designed and built by Pierre-Paul Riquet in order to promote exchanges. This brochure invites you to better understand how the Canal du Midi fits into an inhabited area.

The Canal du Midi is fed by a network of watercourses in the Montagne Noire, supplemented by water intakes in the Fresquel, Aude, Orb and Hérault rivers... The supply system of the Canal du Midi imagined by Riquet is simple, but very ingenious...

Stroll along the banks

On foot or on a bike

It is possible to follow the Canal du Midi along its entire length, from Toulouse to Marseillan, through the 240km (149.1miles).
This is way to discover the region which is very popular with families who come to explore the surrounding area and for experienced sports people. Walk along the flowery and shady banks of the Canal.

With a boat

One of the most beautiful ways to explore the Canal is to take a boat and let yourself be carried away by the rhythm of the water. For a few hours or a few days, discover the locks of the Canal.
